Turkish Cultural Center New York presents “Sufi Music with Rumi” to New Yorkers at New York Public Library as a part of the Sacred Music: “Three Faith: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.” This event will bring people from various backgrounds and provide an insight of the philosophy and theoretical background of Sufism. As Rumi points out in his search for eternal love and peace where everyone is equally welcome; this event also aims to showcase and reflect New York’s inclusiveness, harmony and unity where dreams can come true.
“Come, come no matter who you are, wonderer, worshipper, lover of leaving. This is not a caravan of despair, it doesn’t matter if you’ve broken your vow thousand times still and yet again come”
By Mawlana Jelaladdin Rumi
Sufi music is a genre of music inspired by Sufism, its philosophy, and most importantly by the works of Sufi poet such as Mawlana Jelaleddin Rumi. Sufi music is also central to the whirling dervishes and the ceremony of Sema, who use a slow, sedate form of music featuring the Turkish reed flute (ney) accompanied by bendir (Drum) and kanun (harp like).
The program will start with Sufi music performance by musicians Selcuk Akdas (Ney), Taha Calisir (Kanun) Nurol Kocaturk (def) and Imran Baysal (Vocalist) and will illuminate Rumi’s message for the audience.
Turkish coffee and Light Turkish food will be served after the program.
