A delegation from the Turkish Cultural Center New York visited Dean Howard Schneider at Stony Brook University in Long Island. On January 2, 2012, Dean Schneider was interviewed by Idris Gursoy at AKSYON Magazine, titled “Untrue News won’t be tolerated in the U.S.” (1)
Dean Howard Schneider and Assistant Dean Marcy McGinnis welcomed the delegation warmly and hosted a luncheon before a quick tour of the university. Mehmet Kilic, VP of the TCCNY informed the deans about TCCNY’s mission, programs and outreach efforts to build stronger relations between Turkey and the United States. He said: “Turkey is in top 10 countries in sending international students to study in United States. Therefore, it’s important to build stronger educational bridges between universities in Turkey and the United States.”

Davut Yilmaz, the VP of TCC Long Island talked about the Turkish-Americans living in Long Island. He said that half of their programs are for the Turkish-American community and the other half is for non-Turkish Americans. It is important to reach out to other communities and build better relations.

Aydogan Vatandas, representative of Cihan News Agency also provided brief information about journalism in Turkey in comparison to the U.S. There is a growing Turkish-American community in the U.S. with a lot of media outlets; therefore, it’s a great opportunity for students at the school of journalism to intern and familiarize with Turkey and news about Turkey.
Dean Howard talked about the School of Journalism where students take classes at a News Center built in campus. It is designed like a news agency headquarters where students are learning the social media online while the professor is teaching the course at a projected screen.
Assistant Dean Marcy McGinnis pointed out a picture on the wall which shows only one woman working at the New York Times in 1975. (Betsy Wade in the slot of the horseshoe copy desk, New York Times, 1975) Since then, the number of women choosing journalism has increased tremendously she said. Dean McGinnis worked for CBS for 35 years before she started teaching at Stony Brook University. She said: “It is very important to have a field experience and especially in journalism, professors must know how news are produced and delivered.”
During our visit, the delegation met with five international students from Turkey. They said that they are improving their English language skills; once they are ready, they will continue their graduate studies at Stony Brook University. They said that they are thankful for the TCC Long Island for making their adjustment easy.
