Assemblyman who attended the event, William Colton, was very touched by the hospitality of the family. In addition to sharing the great variety of Turkish foods William Colton was also introduced to the assistant principal, Ismail Topkaya, of the Brooklyn Amity School.

Biography:

William Colton was elected to the New York State Assembly in November 1996, representing the 47th Assembly District, consisting of the neighborhoods of Bensonhurst, Gravesend, Bath Beach, Dyker Heights and Midwood. He has been a lifelong resident of his district, where he married his wife, Mary, and has two stepchildren, Jennifer and Joseph. He was educated at St. Athanasius School and graduated from Cathedral Prep., the minor seminary of the Diocese of Brooklyn. In 1968, he received a B.A. degree in Urban Education from St. John's University. He also was awarded an M.S. degree in Urban Education from Brooklyn College. In 1978, he graduated from St. John's School of Law with a J.D. degree.

 

Abstract:

TCC Brooklyn hosts elected officials for Ramadan iftar at the home of a Turkish family in Brooklyn. Assemblyman who attended the event, William Colton, was very touched by the hospitality of the family. In addition to sharing the great variety of Turkish foods William Colton was also introduced to the assistant principal, Ismail Topkaya, of the Brooklyn Amity School. They spoke about the new building of Amity School and it’s past and present activities. He was very touched by the academic achievements of the students and stated that he would like to visit the school as soon as possible

 

Objective of Event:

 

v  Introduce elected officials to Turkish families within their districts.

v  Explain the purpose and importance of Ramadan for the Muslim community through dialogue and share the culture of iftar.
